Rachael Lillis, Beloved Voice of Misty and Jessie in ‘Pokémon,’ Passes Away at 55
Rachael Lillis, renowned for her roles as Misty and Jessie in the “Pokémon” series and films, passed away on August 10 at the age of 55.
Initially reported to be 46, Lillis’ correct age was confirmed by her sister, Laurie Orr, who stated she was born on July 8, 1969.
Lillis was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. Her “Pokémon” co-star, Veronica Taylor, who voiced Ash Ketchum, shared the news of Lillis’ passing on X. Taylor’s heartfelt statement read, “It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening, 10 August 2024. Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether speaking or singing. She will be forever remembered for the many animated roles she played, with her iconic performances as ‘Pokémon’s’ Misty and Jessie being the most beloved. Rachael was so thankful for all the generous love and support that was given to her as she battled cancer. It truly made a positive difference. Her family also wishes to thank you as they take this time to grieve privately. A memorial is being planned for a future date.”
Lillis began her voice acting career in the 1990s and lent her voice to hundreds of TV shows, anime series, and video games until the late 2010s. She first brought Misty, the water-type gym leader, to life in the original “Pokémon” anime in 1998. Misty quickly became a fan favorite alongside Ash, Pikachu, and Brock. Lillis also voiced Jessie, one of the infamous Team Rocket trio, alongside James and their talking Meowth.
In addition to Misty and Jessie, Lillis voiced the singing Pokémon Jigglypuff and several other creatures. Her voice brought Jigglypuff to life in Nintendo’s “Super Smash Brothers” series and the Pokémon Goldeen in the games. Her contributions to the “Pokémon” movies included “Pokémon: The First Movie,” “Pokémon: The Movie 2000,” “Mewtwo Returns,” “Spell of the Unown,” “Pokémon 4Ever,” “Pokémon Heroes,” “Jirachi Wish Maker,” “Destiny Deoxys,” “Lucario and the Mystery of Mew,” and many more.
Taylor’s tribute further highlighted Lillis’ impact, stating, “We all know Rachael Lillis from the many wonderful roles she played. She filled our Saturday mornings and before/after school hours with her beautiful voice, her terrific comic timing, and her remarkable acting skills. I was lucky enough to know Rachael as a friend. She had unlimited kindness and compassion, even until the very end. She had a great sense of humor, was wonderful to be with, incredibly intelligent, and had such a memory. She worked hard and cared deeply. I am not sure how this very dark void will be filled now that her light no longer shines in it. Like the shooting stars in the Perseids, Rachael was a magnificent wonder and truly special. She burned bright and vanished too soon. She will live on in our memories for eternity.”
Beyond “Pokémon,” Lillis’ voice brought characters to life in “Your Lie in April,” “Hunter x Hunter,” “Winx Club,” and many more, leaving an indelible mark on the world of voice acting.
